To be read with 'Séadna Caib. 3, an Margadh

Séadna had only walked a little way along the road when he was startled.

In front of him was a long thin, Devil, horns on his head, a tail like a fox on him, and crúbs. He had a grey beard like a goat, and two eyes with sparks coming out of them.

'God help me!'

'You don't have to be afraid of me. I'm not going to harm you.

I'd like to help you, if you accept my advice.

I heard you just now saying that you were without food, drink or money.

I'll give you all the money you want on one small condition - that in thirteen years you will come with me.'

The Devil took a big purse out of his pocket:

'Do you see this purse? It doesn't matter how much money you take out of it it will never be empty.

What a wonderful life you would have if you had it.'

He put a little pile of gold pieces in the palm of his hand and reached it under Séadna's eyes. Séadna was spellbound. He reached out his hand, but the Devil withdrew the pile:

'Easy,' said the Devil, 'It isn't a bargain yet.'

'Let it be a bargain', said Séadna.

The Devil disappeared. In his place was a big fat purse.
